Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State donated N100 million to the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Legion on Monday in honor of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
Additionally, he provided four sets of two-bedroom apartments, two utility vehicles, four cows, and 500 bags of rice, among other food items.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the governor presented these items to support legionnaires and the families of fallen heroes, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to their welfare.
Sanwo-Olu made the announcements during the State Executive Council meeting at the launch of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem and Appeal Fund at Lagos House, Ikeja.
He emphasized that the emblem appeal, set for the Jan. 15 commemoration, has become a national tradition and a constitutional duty to honor those who sacrificed their lives for the country.
“Our sovereignty as a nation exists because of these brave men and women.
“This emblem appeal is our responsibility to those who laid down their lives for Nigeria and to those who returned with life-changing injuries.
“It is customary for us to respond to the yearly requests of the Nigerian Legion. We will continue to support the Lagos State Council as a testament to our gratitude for their service to the continued existence and unity of Nigeria,” he added.
The governor highlighted that these donations are a tangible expression of appreciation for the sacrifices that allow Nigerians to live in a free and unified country.
“This is our way of saying thank you for the sacrifices that enable all of us to enjoy peace and freedom,” he stated.
Earlier, Lagos State Commandant of the Nigerian Legion, Mr. Akeem Wolimoh, commended the governor and the state government for their ongoing support.
Wolimoh noted that the Lagos State Chapter of the Legion has greatly benefited from government interventions, which have significantly improved the living conditions of its members and their families.
“Some dependents of our members have been empowered through skill acquisition programs offered by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, as well as other empowerment initiatives from various MDAs of the Lagos State Government,” he said.
